Winemaking Notes
Made from a small patch of Grenache which was grown from cuttings from our 1905 Town Block Vineyard. These vines were manually crop thinned and leaf plucked on the eastern side to concentrate flavours and maximise morning sunlight interception. The vines were hand-picked on the 20th of March and destemmed into an open top fermenter. The wine was pressed off skins 8 days later into old French oak, where the remainder of alcoholic fermentation was completed. Malolactic fermentation occurred prior to racking off lees and returning to barrel until bottling in December 2023. 675 bottles produced.
The J6 range of wines has been created by Benjamin Jones, the 6th Generation of the Jones family who have owned and operated Jones Winery & Vineyard for over 90 years. All wines are crafted from estate grown, unirrigated vines and undergo minimal fining or filtration.
Halliday Wine Companion: A new wine, a new generation Jones winemaker “Ben Jones“ taking a punt with grenache, and he is right on the money. Upfront, vivid and bright in grenache red fruits and spice, but there is a hidden depth here, a sense of quiet complexity. Immediate pleasure gives way to layers of herbs and spices that excite, of anise, thyme, juniper and pepper. Maintains a fine-edged structure throughout. Impressive debut. 92 Points. Jeni Port.
